Types of hookahs

Hookah smoking is a tradition that originated in India several centuries ago. The peculiarity of this method of smoking is the passage of tobacco smoke through a liquid acting as a filter, as well as the presence of a long tube through which the smoker draws smoke. Hookah (also called hookah, nargile or shisha) has long been a favorite hobby of residents of the East, and in recent years has been extremely popular in our country. This is facilitated by the special mysterious and relaxing atmosphere that accompanies the smoking process.

Hookah device

All smoking devices have the following elements in their composition:

• at the bottom there is a flask filled with a liquid that will filter harmful impurities from the smoke;
• the mine is the actual "body" of the hookah, from which a smoking pipe with a mouthpiece comes out;
• at the upper end of the mine there is a saucer that prevents the coal from falling;
• the bowl is the main component of the hookah, where the smoking mixture is placed;
• the foil screen covering the mixture, or kalaud;
• optional – a protective cap that covers the coals from the wind.

Classification of hookahs by material of manufacture

Depending on what materials the hookah components are made of and what kind of construction they have, smoking devices are divided into three classes:

1. Economy. Such devices are characterized by small sizes (less than 40 cm) and a modest, concise design. Due to its small size, this hookah is suitable for use by 1-2 people. Cheap materials are used in production, but this practically does not affect the quality of the device. Basically, economy class hookahs are non–collapsible models. The obvious advantages of such devices are affordable cost and the ability to use them in field conditions.
2. Standard. The most popular models of the middle price segment have a height of about 60-70 cm. They are suitable for smoking alone or in a company of up to 5 people. As a rule, hookahs are made of durable metals that are resistant to rust. Many models are equipped with diffusers that make traction easier and eliminate noise when smoking. Hookahs can be prefabricated and collapsible – the latter type is more expensive, but much easier to transport and maintain.
3. Premium. Elite hookahs are made of durable metal, natural wood and high-quality Bohemian glass. Such models have a rich traditional finish and are often stylized in an antique style. Premium hookahs can reach more than 1 m in height and are suitable for both large companies and for solo use. Hookahs with a square flask design stand out among the new VIP models.

Classic and modern models – what is the difference?

Hookah designs allow us to talk about two more categories:

1. Traditional devices are made according to the old canons, have a classic look and design. In India, Egypt, and Pakistan, authentic hookahs are still produced from natural materials, which are admired by connoisseurs. However, such models are extremely difficult to purchase, and their service life is limited.
2. Modern hookahs – advanced technologies and new materials (stainless steel, glass, anodized aluminum, fiberglass, etc.) are used in their manufacture. They are distinguished by an extended service life and a variety of designs.

Types of hookahs by size

Hookahs are divided into the following types according to the height of the shaft and the volume of the flask:

1. Mini devices (50 cm or less). Instead of a long flexible hose, such models have a rigid small tube (the so-called "needle" design). Suitable for 1-2 people, they often have a travel package for transportation. Mini hookahs are well suited as a gift, as they look very elegant.
2. Hookahs of medium size (usually have a height of 50-70 cm). They can be found in hookah bars and catering establishments. Designed for a company of 3-5 users, they can have a collapsible or monolithic structure. Many models are styled to look like antique samples (most often Egyptian-made) or have intricate decor.
3. High hookahs (over 100 cm). They are equipped with two tubes and are suitable for joint use by the company. They are made of stainless metals and high-strength glass. They are suitable for home use due to their impressive dimensions, which make it difficult to transport products.

Hookah types by origin

The country of origin has a direct impact on the design features and service life of the hookah. The following devices are most in demand among experienced hookah makers:

• Indian – the birthplace of hookahs continues to delight connoisseurs with interesting models, including those made of natural materials;
• Syrian – one of the budget types of hookahs, the model range includes affordable devices made of copper that require special care, but with proper handling can last a long time;
• Egyptian – stainless steel and brass models, most often with original oriental–style finishes, are considered one of the most expensive;
• Czech - genuine handmade Bohemian glass is used in the manufacture of flasks;
• Russian – they are distinguished by their compact size, modern design and high build quality.
